The International Center for Tropical Agriculture (www.ciat.cgiar.org) is a CGIAR research center for tropical agri-commodities, systems and landscapes in the developing world. Cassava is one of the key commodities under CIAT’s global research mandate. As a partner Center of CGIAR Research Program on Roots, Tubers and Bananas (RTB), CIAT is engaged in cassava research-for-development in collaboration with a wide range of national and international partners.
Given the commodity’s importance to the region’s agri-economy, Asia is the primary geographic focus of CIAT’s cassava research. From its regional hub in Hanoi, Vietnam, CIAT and partner-countries develop science-driven needs-based solutions for more productive, sustainable and productive cassava production-utilization systems.
In general, the position will help enable CIAT in generating and using science-based knowledge on how gender and other social identities shape people’s participation in and benefit from agricultural development.
As member of interdisciplinary research teams, he/she contributes to gaining a better understanding of, and exploring ways for improving, how cassava production-utilization systems can: a) equitably benefit women and men, b) foster involvement of youth, and c) uplift the well-being of social groups marginalized for their ethnicity, class and related factors.
Based at the Asia regional office in Hanoi, Vietnam, the successful candidate is also expected to have the capacity and interest to contribute to CIAT Asia-wide research agenda-setting, planning and implementation. The position is part of CIAT Asia’s cross-thematic support team of specialists, and will be co-supervised by the Gender Research Coordinator at headquarters and the Regional Director for Asia.
- Field-based research on gender and socially-differentiated outcomes of cassava research and development on farming households, across value chains, and in agri-food and livelihood systems.
- Desk-based meta-analysis of datasets and other research outputs to distill knowledge towards more gender and socially inclusive policies and practices and in the cassava sector of developing countries.
Capacity building and program development (20%)
- Provide expertise inputs and capacity building support to CIAT Asia on relevant concepts, methods and tools for gender and social inclusion research.
- Participate in research prioritization and strategy development for CIAT Asia, including between cassava and other thematic research priorities in the region, towards achieving more gender-equitable and socially inclusive outcomes of agricultural research for development.
- PhD in applied social sciences, combined with specialized trainings on gender and social inclusion. Degree must have been obtained within the last five years.
- Minimum 2 years of field-oriented work experience related to agricultural production and utilization systems, including livelihood resilience to climate-related risks and/or sustainable natural resource management.
- Previous involvement as gender/social inclusion specialist in interdisciplinary research involving both social and biophysical scientists.
- Broad understanding of gender and social inclusion issues in Asian agriculture; any region-specific work experiences and professional networks would be considered an advantage.
- Strong commitment to team-based research with proven track record as team player.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills in English, including a growing portfolio of scientific publications.
Terms of Employment
The position is internationally recruited and will be based at CIAT’s Regional offices in Hanoi, Vietnam, reporting directly to the Regional Director- Asia. The initial contract will be for up to two (2) years, subject to a probation period of three (3) months, and is renewable depending on performance and availability of resources.
