2010 Induction of Officers
Photo Exhibit and Forum held on Women’s Month by WinFish-EV
In celebration of the Women’s Month last 4 March 2015, the WinFish Eastern Visayas chapter, in cooperation with the UP Visayas Tacloban College Gender and Development Program (GDP), and the Economics 171 class of Dr. Marieta B. Sumagaysay, initiated a photo exhibit and forum on the themes “Women and Work in Farming and Fishing Communities,” and “Listening to the Voices of Women Farmers and Women Fishers,” respectively. Around 60 original photos taken by students in farming and fishing communities were submitted for viewing of the general public. The photo documentation revealed the daily lives of the women workers, their livelihoods, and the relationships, struggles and opportunities that envelope women as their days unfold.
For the forum, two women fishers were invited as speakers. One was a fish drier from Tanauan, Leyte and the other was a fish (bangus) processor and trader from Tacloban City. From their experiences as women and as women fish workers, the forum participants which were composed mostly of students, were able to get a real scenario account of the lives and livelihoods of the women. This activity was designed to enhance student learning from inside the classroom to what is happening in the fields. It also opened opportunities for assistance to the women fish workers from BFAR which was represented by its officials led by ARD Justerie Granali (WinFish -Eastern Visayas President) during the forum.
In her opening message, Ms Kaye Barreda, the Coordinator of the UPVTC- GDP lauded Winfish for this annual activity and pledged support to this and other advocacy initiatives geared towards empowering one of the vulnerable groups in the economy, the women farmers and women fishers/fish workers.
